SOUTHERN LEBANON, 1999 FEB 7 (Knight-Ridder) -- Israeli Defense Force
fighter-bombers have struck roads and railways in southern Lebanon. In
a series of closely spaced attacks, the IDF aircraft struck 4 of the
major north-south routes in southern Lebanon. The attacks began at
11:45 (local time), and consisted of three distinct waves. It is
reported by eye witnesses that civilian trucks and cars were
specifically targeted.

A total of 15 vehicles are believed to have been destroyed, along with
heavy damage to the roads themselves. There are no reports of
casualties as yet, but they are believed to number at least 20.

Israel released a statement shortly after the beginning of the attacks.
In it, Israel claimed that attacks were strictly limited to supply
vehicles of the Hezbollah, in an effort to "kill the head by severing
the neck."
